Angola’s entry visas, work authorisation and residence arrangements may be administered separately; a short tourist or business visit does not automatically grant the right to work locally.

The Work Visa is for foreign non-resident employees hired by a genuine employer in Angola and permits work only for the sponsoring employer in the approved occupation.

Nationality, actual activities, role qualifications, employer obligations, workforce ratios, contract duration and family arrangements may all affect the applicable requirements.

Visa Decision Tips

Angola provides different entry and work pathways for short-term tourist or business visits and foreign non-resident employees hired by a local employer. The appropriate arrangement should be assessed by considering the person’s nationality, document type, actual activities, employer eligibility, role and professional qualifications, sector opinions, local recruitment, workforce ratios, contract duration and family arrangements.

Based on materials available as of the content review date, this guide outlines Angola’s main visitor, work-visa, residence and status-maintenance requirements. Entry visas, work authorisation and residence documents serve different purposes. An application under review, employment contract or invitation letter does not itself prove that entry, residence or work has been approved; final requirements and outcomes are subject to the competent authority’s rules at the time of submission.

I. Main Visa and Work Permit Types

The two pathways above are the main types covered by this guide; they are not an exhaustive list of every Angolan visa category.

1. Short-Term Tourist and Business Visits

Nationals of some countries may enter Angola for short tourist stays under visa-exemption arrangements, but tourism facilitation does not permit local employment. Meetings, business visits and paid work must be assessed under their respective categories, and a short-stay allowance cannot be treated as work authorisation.

Whether an activity qualifies as a visit depends on the work actually performed, not merely the itinerary label or where salary is paid. Installation, repair, training and on-site client services should be reviewed carefully to determine whether work authorisation or a specific exemption is required.

2. Work Visa

The Work Visa is intended for foreign non-resident employees hired by a genuine employer in Angola and is limited to work for the sponsoring employer in the approved occupation.

The employee must be an adult and meet the technical or scientific professional qualifications and health requirements for the role. The employer must obtain any applicable sector opinion and meet local recruitment, tax, social-security and immigration obligations. Under the 2025 rules, the foreign non-resident workforce of an employer subject to the rule should generally not exceed 30%, with the remaining 70% comprising Angolan workers; special regimes must be assessed separately.

A Work Visa permits multiple entries. The initial approved stay may be up to 365 days but cannot exceed the employment-contract term. It may be renewed for equivalent periods until the contract ends, provided tax, social-security and other requirements continue to be met. The authorisation is linked to the employer, occupation and project. A change of employer, role or project requires the applicable new authorisation. When employment ends, the original work right, any residence transition and departure requirements should be addressed together.

II. Entry, Family and Other Arrangements

Visa, work-approval and residence documents should align with the genuine activity and with one another’s validity periods. Family members of a Work Visa holder must apply separately under family-reunification or Temporary Stay arrangements. Dependant status does not automatically confer the right to work.

A family member who intends to work in Angola must independently confirm and obtain the appropriate work authorisation. Study, transit and other personal statuses must also satisfy their own requirements; the principal applicant’s authorisation cannot be used directly as a family member’s entry or employment document.

III. Renewals, Changes, Departure and Status Maintenance

Change scenario
Key status-maintenance point
Work Visa renewal
Before expiry, confirm the contract, tax, social-security and other conditions, and apply for renewal for an equivalent period. Total validity cannot extend beyond the employment contract.
Change of employer
The existing visa permits work only for the sponsoring employer. Obtain the applicable new authorisation before changing employers.
Change of role or project
Reconfirm the approved occupation, project and work scope. Amending the employment contract alone is not sufficient.
Change in workforce ratio
An employer subject to the rule should continue checking that foreign non-resident workers generally do not exceed 30% of its workforce; special regimes must be assessed separately.
Termination or end of assignment
Address the original work right, residence transition or departure together. An unexpired visa does not permit work for another employer.
Change in family status
When the principal applicant’s employment or visa basis changes, reassess the family members’ reunification, stay and work rights.

Frequently Asked Questions

No. The document name alone is not enough. Confirm whether the approved category includes the required work authorisation, whether it is tied to a specific employer or activity, and whether all applicable post-entry conditions have been met.

No. The duration actually granted may be limited by the contract, passport, occupation, quota and applicant circumstances. The initial validity, renewal rules and cumulative limit should be assessed separately.
