BIDA, BEZA, BEPZA and other authorities have different jurisdictions, so businesses cannot apply one route indiscriminately to every entity or project.

Holding an E or E1 visa does not itself mean a separate work permit has been obtained; entry visas and foreign-worker approval must be confirmed separately.

Short technical tasks such as installation, maintenance and supervision may also require work authorisation and are not automatically exempt merely because the stay is brief.

Visa Decision Tips

Bangladesh has different visa and work-permit routes for tourism, business visits, employment and technical assignments. The correct route depends on the enterprise’s zone, registration and project type, the competent authority, actual duties, task nature, employer conditions, applicant qualifications and planned stay.

This guide reflects Bangladesh visa and work-permit requirements. Entry visas, authority recommendations and work permits have separate functions. Holding one does not mean every work formality is complete; final requirements and decisions depend on the relevant authority at submission.

I. Main Visa and Work Permit Types

The routes below are principal options covered by this guide and are not an exhaustive list of every Bangladesh visa category.

1. Tourist and Business Visit Visas

Travellers should obtain the applicable visit or business visa based on nationality and itinerary. Where visa-on-arrival arrangements are available, applicants must still meet the relevant nationality, visit-purpose and document requirements; it should not be treated as a default option for every traveller.

Meetings, negotiations and non-work fact-finding can generally be assessed as visitor activities. Installation, maintenance, supervision, ongoing training or work in a Bangladesh-based role should be checked against the applicable technical or employment route. Visa validity, authorised stay per entry and extension conditions depend on the issued document.

2. BIDA-Supervised Work Permit

The employer should hold the appropriate corporate status and BIDA approval, and provide the contract, board resolution, employee composition, tax materials and evidence of role necessity. It must meet the applicable local-to-foreign employee ratio.

The applicant’s education and experience should match the proposed role, but there is no single bachelor’s-degree requirement for every applicant. An initial work permit is commonly approved for one year. Renewal depends on the role, employer, tax status and authority review, so no uniform promise should be made about the total period a person may work.

Economic zones, export processing zones, NGOs and other entity types may fall under BEZA, BEPZA or another authority. BIDA requirements should not automatically be applied to every business or project.

3. Employment and Technical Visas (E/E1 and Similar)

E, E1 and similar visas cover relevant employment or technical activities. The specific category is assessed by the embassy and immigration authorities based on the employer, project and competent-authority documents.

Technical tasks under an E1 visa, including installation, repair and supervision, are not automatically exempt from work-permit requirements because the working period is short. Recommendation letters, work permits and visas have separate functions. An employment visa does not mean all labour approvals are complete; check the initial visa stay, work-permit validity and extension requirements separately, and undertake work only within the approved scope.

II. Entry, Family and Other Arrangements

1. Entry and Stay

There may be prescribed timing between entry and a work-permit application. For example, the BIDA route commonly involves filing the work-permit application within 15 days after entry. This is not permission to work without approval for 15 days: the lawful start date and registration timing depend on the individual’s visa, recommendation documents and authority requirements.

2. Family and Other Statuses

Eligible family members may apply for the appropriate accompanying or dependent visa based on the principal applicant’s status, but family status does not provide employment rights automatically. Investors, students and institutional personnel may follow different visa or permit categories and should not automatically be processed as ordinary foreign employees.

III. Renewals, Changes, Departure and Status Maintenance

Change scenario
Key status-maintenance point
Visa extension
Visa extensions and work-permit renewals are handled separately by the appropriate authorities; renewing one document does not automatically extend the other.
Work-permit renewal
Arrange renewal before expiry, taking account of the role, employer, tax position and authority-review requirements.
Changing employer
This may require cancellation of the original work permit, a new application and re-entry arrangements; do not start with the new employer before formalities are completed.
Changing role or salary
A role or salary change may require amendment or a new application; confirm before the change takes effect.
Project change
A project change may alter the competent authority or basis of approval, so reassess the applicable route.
Termination
Promptly handle work-permit cancellation, tax clearance and lawful status-change or departure arrangements.
Compliance risk
Working without the applicable authorisation, performing activities inconsistent with visa purpose or starting work before completing formalities may create compliance risk.

Employers and foreign employees should keep visas, recommendations, work permits, employer, role, salary and project arrangements aligned. Where a change is planned, confirm the authority and filing requirements before beginning the new activity.
