Local employment by a Brazilian entity under a Brazilian employment contract and technical assistance by an employee of a foreign employer follow different VITEM V work routes.
Rules may differ for ordinary passports and diplomatic or official documents. Nationality, existing status, employment relationship, project scope, qualifications and contract term can affect the requirements.
Visa Decision Tips
Brazil has different visa, work and residence routes for short visits, local employment and foreign technical assistance. The appropriate route depends on nationality, actual activities, employing entity, salary-payment arrangement, employment relationship, technical-assistance or service contract, project scope, professional qualifications, contract term and family arrangements.
This guide reflects materials reviewed on 11 September 2026. Visitor visas, VITEM V visas, work authorisation and residence approval have separate functions. A pending application, employment or service contract, or invitation is not proof of approved entry, residence or work; final requirements and decisions depend on the competent authority at submission.
I. Main Visa and Work Permit Types
The pathways below are the principal categories covered by this guide and are not an exhaustive list of all Brazilian visa categories.
1. Short-Term Tourist and Business Visits
Tourism and business visits use visitor visas or applicable visa-free arrangements, with entry and stay rules varying by nationality. Visitor status cannot replace the work authorisation needed for local employment or technical-assistance activities. Anyone planning to work in Brazil should distinguish a Brazilian local-employment arrangement from foreign technical services and choose the appropriate work-visa and residence basis.
Assess visitor status from actual work, not merely the itinerary label or salary-payment location. Installation, repair, training and client-site services should be reviewed for a work permit or specific exemption.
2. Local Employment Work Visa and Residence (VITEM V)
This route is for foreign employees genuinely employed by a Brazilian entity under a Brazilian employment contract and placed on local payroll. The employer must be a lawful Brazilian entity and act as applicant in MigranteWeb.
Under RN 02/2017, the role and contract must be genuine. Applicants normally meet a combination of education or vocational education and relevant experience, such as a bachelor’s degree plus at least two years of relevant post-graduation experience, or another permitted technical-education and experience combination. Regulated professions also require their applicable registration. There is no single minimum-salary figure that applies to every VITEM V category.
The usual work residence for ordinary employment may be granted for up to two years, but the actual period depends on the residence approval and contract rather than the VITEM V visa sticker alone. Renewal or conversion to indefinite residence requires the relevant conditions. Obtain the required authorisation before changing employer, role or activities. On termination, the person needs another lawful work and residence basis.
3. Technical Assistance Work Visa (VITEM V)
This route is for employees of a foreign employer sent to Brazil for technical assistance, technology transfer, installation, maintenance, training or contracted services, without creating a local employment relationship with the Brazilian host.
The applicant needs a genuine technical-assistance or service contract, a defined project and the necessary technical qualifications, while maintaining the employment relationship with the foreign employer. Different technical-assistance, urgent-task and equipment-service branches have different authorisation requirements; these activities are not ordinary visitor activities.
The initial period depends on the specific technical-assistance category and contract, and not every branch is granted for one year. The availability of extension, conversion to local employment or host-entity change depends on the applicable RN rules. Obtain a new authorisation or amendment if the task or contract changes. At task end, the person must not continue working for a Brazilian entity under the original status and must depart or obtain new status as approved.
II. Entry, Family and Other Arrangements
Visas, work approvals and residence documents must align with actual activities and one another’s validity periods. Family members of local-employment VITEM V holders may apply for residence through family reunification, but their ability to work depends on their own residence status and professional-admission requirements; they should not start work based on a relationship document alone.
Short-term technical-assistance work visas do not usually form a stable family-residence route. Family residence and work rights must be assessed independently. Study, transit and other personal statuses have their own requirements, and the principal applicant’s permission is not the family member’s entry or employment document.
III. Renewals, Changes, Departure and Status Maintenance
Change scenario | Key status-maintenance point |
Local-employment work residence renewal | Follow the residence approval, employment contract and applicable conditions; do not determine duration from the VITEM V visa sticker alone. |
Conversion to indefinite residence | Apply only after meeting the relevant conditions; the original fixed period does not convert automatically. |
Employer, role or activity change | Obtain the required authorisation before the change; changing only the employment contract or payroll arrangement is insufficient. |
Technical-assistance task or contract change | Obtain a new authorisation or amendment under the applicable RN and reassess the host entity, project and qualifications. |
Technical-assistance task end | Do not continue working for a Brazilian entity under the original status; depart or obtain new status as approved. |
Termination | Reconfirm the lawful work and residence basis. An unexpired document does not authorise work for a new employer. |
Family-status change | Recheck family residence and individual work rights when the principal applicant’s work or residence basis changes. |
