Botswana’s entry visas, work authorisation and residence arrangements may be managed separately. An entry visa does not itself provide work rights, and a work permit does not replace lawful residence.

Long-term local employment generally involves a work permit, residence permit and, where applicable, employment visa; the employer must demonstrate role need and local recruitment.

An Emergency Work Permit is limited to genuinely urgent, time-bound short-term remunerated or profit-making activity and cannot be renewed in cycles to support long-term work.

Visa Decision Tips

Botswana has different entry, work and residence arrangements for short visits, continuing local employment and urgent short-term work. The right route depends on nationality, actual activities, employer and role, qualifications, contract period, work location and family arrangements.

This guide reflects materials reviewed on 11 September 2026. Visas, work permits and residence permits have different functions. A pending application, work contract or invitation is not proof of approved entry, residence or work; final requirements and decisions depend on the competent authority at submission.

I. Main Visa and Work Permit Types

The routes below are the principal categories covered by this guide and are not an exhaustive list of all Botswana visa categories.

1. Short-Term Tourist and Business Visits

Whether tourism or business visitors need a visa in advance depends on nationality and activity purpose. Employment visas, work permits and residence permits are separate authorisations: holding an entry visa does not grant work rights, and a work permit does not replace lawful residence.

Assess visitor status based on actual work, not just the itinerary label or salary-payment location. Installation, repair, training and client-site services should be reviewed for a work permit or specific exemption.

2. Work Permit, Residence Permit and Applicable Employment Visa

This route is for non-citizens continuously employed in Botswana by a genuine local employer. An employment visa is relevant only to visa-required nationalities and the applicant must first hold a valid work permit and residence permit.

The employer must demonstrate the role need and local recruitment, providing an advertisement no older than six months, a contract and local understudy. The employee’s degree or qualifications must match the role. Overseas certificates must be translated into English and verified as required by BQA, while regulated professions need the applicable approvals. Work and residence permits are distinct approvals.

The initial period is limited by the earliest expiry of the actual work permit, residence permit, employment visa and contract. Permit renewal should be filed at least six months in advance. Before changing employer, role, location or duties, confirm whether a new application or amendment is needed. On termination, address permit cancellation, residence conversion or departure together.

3. Emergency Work Permit (EWP)

An EWP is for genuinely urgent, time-limited short-term remunerated or profit-making activities. The application must identify the urgent task, host entity, duration and activities.

The up-to-three-month route still requires an advertisement, contract or job offer, CV, qualifications or BQA materials, professional approvals and a local understudy. The up-to-seven-day route is limited to officially allowed extremely short urgent matters. The actual period is determined by the EWP approval and is capped at seven days or three months. Reapply if the activity, host entity or duration changes. An EWP cannot be cyclically renewed for long-term work; at expiry, move to the ordinary pathway or stop activity and depart.

II. Entry, Family and Other Arrangements

Visas, work approvals and residence documents must align with actual activities and their respective validity periods. Family members of work-permit, residence and applicable employment-visa holders must independently apply for dependent residence or visas; family status does not grant work rights automatically. An EWP does not create stable family residence or work rights.

Family, study, transit and other personal statuses have their own requirements. The principal applicant’s permission is not the family member’s entry or employment document.

III. Renewals, Changes, Departure and Status Maintenance

Change scenario
Key status-maintenance point
Work-permit renewal
File at least six months in advance and separately check validity of work permits, residence, visas and family documents.
Employer, role, location or duties change
Confirm whether a new application or amendment is required before the change; changing the employment contract alone is insufficient.
EWP activity, host or period change
Reapply; do not use repetitive renewal to support long-term work.
EWP expiry
Move to the applicable ordinary work route or stop activity and depart.
Termination or task end
Handle work-permit cancellation, residence conversion, family status or departure arrangements together.
New-job search or transition
An unexpired card does not authorise work for a new employer; assess any statutory transition based on the actual approval and remaining stay.
