Get a preliminary assessment →Ecuador's entry visas, work authorization and residence arrangements may be administered separately. Short-term tourism or business visits do not automatically grant local employment rights.
Dependent employment, independent professional services and self-employment use different work and residence bases, so the pathway should match the actual contractual relationship.
The applicable conditions differ for ordinary passports and diplomatic, official or other documents. A person's nationality and existing status may also affect the specific rules.
Visa Decision Tips
Ecuador provides different entry and temporary-residence pathways for short-term tourism and business visits, dependent employment, independent professional services and self-employment. The appropriate arrangement should be assessed using nationality, actual activities, contractual relationship, employer and position, professional qualifications, lawful means of subsistence, tax and professional-entry obligations, and dependant arrangements.
This guide summarizes Ecuador's principal visit, work and residence arrangements based on materials available as of the content review date. Entry visas, the basis for employment or professional activity, and residence documents serve different purposes. A pending application, employment contract, services agreement or invitation letter does not prove that entry, residence or work has already been authorized. Final conditions and decisions are subject to the competent authorities' requirements at filing.
I. Main Visa and Work Permit Types
Type | Who It Applies To | Key Conditions |
Short-Term Tourism and Business Visits | Visitors travelling for tourism, family visits and permitted business activities | Meet nationality and entry conditions; no automatic right to local employment |
Temporary Residence for an Employment Relationship | Foreign employees who establish a genuine dependent employment relationship with an Ecuadorian employer and work continuously in Ecuador | A genuine employment contract or employer evidence, a passport valid for at least six months at filing, no criminal record, lawful means of subsistence and qualifications required for the position |
Temporary Residence for Independent Professional Services or Self-Employment | People undertaking genuine independent self-employment, professional services, civil consulting or activities supported by a legally valid sponsorship letter | Genuine independent professional activity, qualifications or experience, a services contract or eligible support basis, and lawful means of subsistence |
The table lists only the principal types covered in this guide and is not an exhaustive list of all visa categories.
1. Short-Term Tourism and Business Visits
Short-term tourism visits generally follow the visa, visa-exemption and authorized-stay conditions applicable to the traveller's nationality. Tourism status does not authorize local employment. Dependent employment, professional services and self-employment each use a different work and residence basis and must match the actual contractual relationship.
Whether an activity qualifies as a visit depends on the actual duties, not merely the itinerary label or where salary is paid. Installation, repair, training and on-site client services should be checked carefully to determine whether work authorization or a specific exemption is required.
2. Temporary Residence for an Employment Relationship
This temporary residence applies to foreign employees who establish a genuine dependent employment relationship with an Ecuadorian employer and work continuously in Ecuador.
The applicant must provide a genuine employment contract or employer evidence. At filing, the passport must have at least six months' validity, and the applicant must meet criminal-record, lawful-means-of-subsistence and role-qualification requirements. Professional practice and labour or social-security registrations are separate obligations.
The initial validity is two years. Renewal, transition to permanent residence and the specific filing window should be reviewed under the current rules of Ecuador's Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Human Mobility (MREMH) and the continuing employment basis.
Before changing employer, position or type of employment relationship, confirm whether the visa or labour registration must be updated. After employment ends, the person may not continue working on the basis of the former employer and should complete a change of status, renewal, cancellation or departure. Specific residence arrangements depend on applicable law and the person's own permit.
3. Temporary Residence for Independent Professional Services or Self-Employment
This pathway applies to genuine independent self-employment, professional services, civil consulting or activities supported by a legally valid sponsorship letter.
The applicant must have genuine independent professional activity, corresponding qualifications or experience, a services contract or eligible support basis, and lawful means of subsistence, while meeting local tax and professional-entry obligations. If the actual relationship constitutes managed employment, the appropriate employee pathway should be used; merely renaming an employment contract as a consulting agreement does not change the underlying relationship.
This temporary residence visa is generally valid for two years and permits multiple entries, subject to the actual approval. Renewal requires continued eligible activity and lawful means of subsistence. A person moving into dependent employment should change to the appropriate work status and complete labour registration rather than changing only the contract's name.
II. Entry, Dependants and Other Arrangements
Visas, work approvals and residence documents should correspond to the actual activities and to one another's validity periods. Eligible family members of a holder of temporary residence for employment may apply for dependant or corresponding temporary residence. A family member intending to work must confirm the work rights included in their own visa.
Family status and work rights for dependants of holders of temporary residence for independent professional services or self-employment must also be applied for or verified separately. Study, transit and other personal statuses must independently meet their corresponding conditions. The principal applicant's permission cannot be used directly as a family member's entry or employment document.
III. Renewals, Changes, Termination and Status Maintenance
Change Scenario | Key Status-Maintenance Point |
Renewal of temporary residence for employment | Maintain an eligible employment basis and apply under MREMH's current rules and filing window. |
Renewal of temporary residence for independent professional services or self-employment | Maintain eligible activity and lawful means of subsistence and comply with tax and professional-entry obligations. |
Change of employer, position or employment-relationship type | Confirm whether the visa or labour registration must be updated and obtain the applicable approval before starting new work. |
Change from independent services to dependent employment | Move to the appropriate work status and complete labour registration; changing only the contract name is insufficient. |
Change of work location, contract or assignment | Confirm the notification, amendment or new-application requirements based on the actual change; amending only the contract is insufficient. |
Employment or assignment ends | Do not continue working on the basis of the former employer; complete a change of status, renewal, cancellation or departure. |
Consequences for dependant status | Check each dependant's residence and work rights separately; the principal applicant's permit cannot be used as the dependant's employment document. |
An unexpired card does not mean its holder may work for any new employer. If a statutory job-search or transition period exists, its applicability should be assessed against the actual approval and remaining period of stay.
