The initial authorized stay under an Employment Visa is 70 days, but this is not the same as the period of authorization for long-term work and residence.
Requirements for long-term work and re-entry may differ according to the region, industry, and circumstances of the individual case.
Visa Decision Tips
Myanmar provides different entry visas for tourism, business visits, and employment. The appropriate pathway should be assessed based on the applicant’s nationality, the embassy or consulate handling the application, purpose of visit, actual activities, employer or project entity, industry, work location, and whether long-term stay or repeated entry and exit will be required.
This guide summarizes Myanmar’s visa and work-permit requirements to help companies and individuals understand the common pathways. An entry visa alone does not mean that every employment procedure has been completed. Long-term assignments may also involve an extension of stay, foreigner registration, labor procedures, and industry or local approvals. Final requirements and approval decisions are subject to the rules applied by the competent authorities at the time of filing.
1. Main Visa and Work Permit Types
Type | Who It Applies To | Key Conditions |
Tourist Visa | Eligible travelers visiting Myanmar for tourism | Must meet the applicable nationality and port-of-entry requirements and must not conduct business or employed work |
Business Visa | People attending short-term meetings, negotiations, and other permitted business visits | Requires a genuine Myanmar inviting party, company documents, and visit materials; it must not be used as a substitute for employment status |
Employment Visa | Foreign nationals employed by a genuine Myanmar employer or project entity | Requires a genuine basis for the employment and business, qualifications matching the position, and completion of the applicable subsequent registrations |
1. Tourist Visa
Tourist eVisas and other tourist visas are limited to permitted tourism activities. Whether an applicant may use the relevant visa, the authorized ports of entry, and any additional required documents should be confirmed under the current arrangements.
A tourist visa cannot cover a company position, technical services, or continuing business activities. The visa validity and the authorized period of stay after entry must be calculated separately. Whether an extension is available depends on the visa category held and cannot be determined by applying employment-status extension rules.
2. Business Visa
A business visa or business eVisa generally requires support from an inviting Myanmar company together with an invitation letter, company-registration documents, and other applicable materials. The business activities conducted must remain consistent with the declared purpose of the visit.
A long-term assignment at a client site, taking up a local Myanmar position, or continuously providing project services cannot be handled solely through a business invitation and repeated extensions. Even an extended stay does not by itself prove that all labor, industry, or project authorizations have been obtained.
3. Employment Visa
The Employment Visa allows a foreign national to enter Myanmar for employment. The employer should provide genuine invitation or appointment documents, a contract, company information, and applicable industry approvals. The applicant should hold a valid passport, have qualifications matching the role, and satisfy applicable health and background requirements.
The initial authorized stay under an Employment Visa is 70 days. For a long-term assignment, the applicant should obtain the appropriate extension of stay or stay permit and complete the applicable foreigner registration, labor, and local procedures. Different projects may not require exactly the same combination of documents, and the Employment Visa itself does not mean that all long-term work-authorization procedures have been completed.
People who need to leave and re-enter repeatedly should also confirm the appropriate re-entry arrangements. The extension of stay, re-entry documents, and labor authorization must each remain valid.
2. Entry, Dependants, and Other Arrangements
1. Entry and Stay
The applicant’s nationality, the embassy or consulate handling the application, the project’s industry, and the work location may all affect entry and subsequent procedures.
The security situation, ports of entry, flight arrangements, and access requirements for specific regions must be confirmed separately. Holding a valid visa does not mean that the holder may enter every area of Myanmar.
2. Family Members and Other Statuses
Arrangements for accompanying family members and study should be confirmed according to the principal applicant’s status and corresponding visa category.
Dependent status cannot directly replace an Employment Visa. A family member who plans to work in Myanmar must obtain support from a genuine employer and complete the applicable employment procedures separately.
3. Renewals, Changes, Termination, and Status Maintenance
Change Scenario | Key Status-Maintenance Point |
Long-term stay | After entering under an Employment Visa, arrange the applicable foreigner registration, extension of stay, or stay permit early rather than waiting until the 70-day period has ended. |
Renewal | Renewal depends on a genuine employer and a continuing valid basis for work, and labor, registration, stay, and industry requirements should be checked together. |
Change of employer | Before changing employers, confirm whether a new visa, an amendment to the existing status, or re-registration is required. |
Change of position or project | A change of role or project may affect the original basis for work; confirm the new approval requirements before the change. |
Change of work location | A new work location may involve regional-access requirements, local procedures, or re-registration and should be confirmed in advance. |
Re-entry | People who leave and re-enter repeatedly must ensure that re-entry arrangements, extensions of stay, and labor authorization are each valid. |
Termination of employment | After employment ends, promptly address stay, employer sponsorship, status cancellation, change of status, or departure procedures. |
Grace period | Do not assume that a single grace period applies after employment or the original basis for work ends. |
Long-term work in Myanmar may involve a visa, stay authorization, foreigner registration, labor authorization, and industry or local approvals. The extension or continued validity of any one document does not mean that the others are automatically extended.
