A Labour Permit and a Working Visa are two separate layers of documentation; obtaining only one does not mean that all conditions for lawful commencement of work have been met.

The authorized work period depends on the competent authority’s recommendation, the Labour Permit, and the contract and cannot uniformly be treated as one year.

When changing employer or project, a new recommendation and approval from the competent authority may be required; existing documents do not transfer automatically.

Visa Decision Tips

Nepal provides different visa and status pathways for tourism, other permitted short-term visits, investment and business operation, employment, and accompanying family members. The appropriate pathway should be assessed based on the actual activities, employer or project entity, job duties, work location, contract term, recommendation from the competent authority, and the applicant’s current lawful stay status.

This guide summarizes publicly available requirements relating to Nepal visas and work permits to help companies and individuals understand the common pathways. A tourist visa, business status, or another entry document is not the same as work authorization. Visas, Labour Permits, and related approvals are handled separately by different authorities, and final requirements and approval decisions are subject to the competent authorities’ rules at the time of filing.

1. Main Visa and Work Permit Types

Type
Who It Applies To
Key Conditions
Tourism and Short-Term Visits
People visiting for tourism or other permitted non-work short stays
Select the visa according to the actual activities and do not take up employment under tourist status
Labour Permit and Working Visa
Foreign nationals hired by a genuine Nepalese employer or approved project
Obtain the competent authority’s recommendation, the corresponding decision, and a Labour Permit, and ensure that the role matches the contract

1. Tourism and Short-Term Visits

A tourist visa is for permitted tourism activities and does not allow the holder to take up employment. Short-term commercial dealings should use the visa appropriate to the actual purpose of the visit.

Nepal’s Business Visa is mainly intended for investors and businesspeople who meet the investment or business-operation conditions. It is not a general visa for ordinary meetings or local employment. An applicant employed locally in Nepal, implementing a project, or continuously providing technical services should separately confirm the Labour Permit and Working Visa arrangements.

Authorized visit periods such as 15, 30, or 90 days cannot be used to infer the validity of a Working Visa. Extending visitor status does not create the right to work.

2. Labour Permit and Working Visa

A Labour Permit provides the underlying authorization for a foreign national to perform the agreed work. The immigration authority issues the Working Visa based on the competent authority’s recommendation, the Labour Permit, and the employment agreement. The Nepalese employer should have a lawful business or approved project and a genuine position, and the recommendation should cover the relevant work period.

The applicant must hold a valid passport and maintain a visa status that meets the requirements. Evidence of education, work experience, or professional ability should be provided according to the specific position and the competent authority’s requirements. Nepal does not have a single education requirement or foreign-employee salary threshold that applies to every industry.

The initial approved period is jointly determined by the competent authority’s recommendation, the Labour Permit, the contract, and the immigration authority. Approval periods may differ among projects and individuals. To continue working, first ensure that the recommendation and Labour Permit continue to provide coverage, and then maintain the Working Visa. Holding only a Labour Permit or only a Working Visa should not be understood as satisfying every condition for lawful commencement of work.

2. Entry, Dependants, and Other Arrangements

1. Entry and Stay

The applicant should confirm whether the current visa and lawful stay status can transition into the work application and should comply with applicable registration requirements. Special projects, government-cooperation projects, or professional roles may require additional approvals. Facilitated treatment in an individual case should not be treated as a nationwide exemption.

2. Family Members and Other Statuses

Eligible family members may apply for dependant status or another corresponding non-tourist category. The competent authority’s recommendation will generally need to identify the accompanying family members.

Dependent status does not automatically grant the right to work. A family member who plans to work in Nepal must obtain their own Labour Permit and Working Visa and cannot work directly under accompanying-family status.

3. Renewals, Changes, Termination, and Status Maintenance

Change Scenario
Key Status-Maintenance Point
Renewal
Before documents expire, ensure that the competent authority’s recommendation, the Labour Permit, and the contract remain valid, and maintain the Working Visa promptly.
Change of employer
First confirm whether a new recommendation, Labour Permit, and Working Visa are required; the original approval does not automatically transfer to the new employer.
Change of position or project
The recommendation and permit may restrict the role, project, and period. Before making a change, confirm whether a new application or update is required.
Change of work location
The original recommendation or permit may limit the work location; confirm the new approval requirements before the change.
Change of sponsoring entity
A change of sponsor may affect the basis for the original recommendation, permit, and visa; reconfirm the applicable procedures.
Termination of employment or project
Stop performing work that is no longer authorized and promptly complete status cancellation, change of status, or departure procedures.
Non-compliance risk
Do not continue working if the recommendation, Labour Permit, or Working Visa has expired or no longer covers the actual work.

Work authorization and status maintenance must be handled together. A renewal or change cannot rely solely on existing documents. The competent authorities’ requirements should be confirmed according to the new employment, role, project, location, sponsoring entity, and contract arrangements.

Frequently Asked Questions

No. A Labour Permit and a Working Visa serve separate purposes. A foreign national working in Nepal must obtain the necessary combination of both documents under the applicable pathway. Holding a Labour Permit alone does not mean that the Working Visa procedures have been completed.

This cannot be assumed. The competent authority’s recommendation and the Labour Permit may be limited to a specific project, work location, and period. Even if the employer does not change, confirm before changing projects whether a new recommendation or approval is required or whether the existing permit must be updated.
