Slovakia’s entry visas, work authorization, and residence arrangements may be administered separately. Short-term tourism or business visits do not automatically grant local employment rights.

For long-term employment, highly qualified hiring, and short-term professional assignments, the applicable permit should be selected according to the actual activities, not only the trip name or where salary is paid.

Different conditions apply to ordinary passports and diplomatic, service, or other official documents. A person’s nationality and existing status may also affect the rules.

Visa Decision Tips

Slovakia has different visa, work, and residence routes for short-term tourism and business visits, regular employment, highly qualified employment, and intracompany transfers. The appropriate route should be assessed from nationality, document type, actual activities, employer and role, labor-market procedures, qualifications, salary, contract term, group relationship, and family arrangements.

This guide summarizes Slovakia’s main visit, work permit, residence, and status-maintenance requirements based on materials available as of the review date. Visas, work approvals, and residence documents serve different purposes. A pending application, employment contract, or invitation does not prove that entry, residence, or work has been approved. Final requirements and decisions are subject to the competent authorities’ rules at submission.

These are the main categories covered here, not an exhaustive list of Slovak visa categories.

1. Short-Term Tourism and Business Visits

Chinese ordinary passport holders generally need an applicable Schengen Type C visa for short tourism or business visits. Schengen stays are normally limited to 90 days in any 180-day period across all Schengen countries. Visa validity and entry count are not the same as the permitted stay.

Short visits do not automatically grant work rights, and work-permit exemptions must meet Slovak conditions. The actual work determines whether an activity is a visit. Installation, repair, training, and on-site client services require specific confirmation of any permit or exemption.

2. Single Permit for Regular Employment

This permit is for third-country nationals hired by a genuine Slovak employer for regular employment. The employer must first report the vacancy and complete the applicable labor-market procedure. The employee needs a genuine contract or job offer and must meet qualification, criminal-record, and accommodation requirements; regulated professions require recognition or authorization.

Temporary residence for employment may be approved for the expected employment period, up to a statutory maximum of five years, subject to the contract and decision. Renewal should be requested before expiry. Employer or role changes require the applicable vacancy, notification, and residence procedures. A protection period after termination is not open work authorization.

3. EU Blue Card

The EU Blue Card is for highly skilled workers with higher professional qualifications or qualifying recognized experience who meet the salary threshold. Salary is generally at least 1.2 times the previous year’s national average monthly salary; eligible recent graduates may qualify at 1.0 times. Based on the 2025 average monthly salary of EUR 1,620, the 2026 thresholds are EUR 1,944 and EUR 1,620, and must be adjusted when the application year changes.

The Blue Card may be valid for up to five years, or for the contract or confirmation period plus 90 days, capped at five years. Changes of employer, role, or salary require confirmation of the applicable notification or approval rules. When the employment purpose ends, status conversion or departure must be handled lawfully.

4. Intracompany Transfer Permit (ICT)

The ICT permit covers managers, specialists, or trainees transferred from an overseas group entity to a related Slovak entity. Managers and specialists generally need at least six months of continuous group employment; trainees need at least three months. The group relationship, assignment, role, and return arrangement must be documented.

The maximum period is three years for managers or specialists and one year for trainees. Termination of the transfer purpose must be reported within three working days. A stated 60-day protection period is not unconditional work authorization. Changes to the group entity or role require confirmation of mobility or new-permit rules.

2. Entry, Family Members, and Other Arrangements

Visas, work approvals, and residence documents should match the actual activities and each other’s validity periods. Family members of Single Permit holders apply separately for temporary residence for family reunification, and their work rights depend on their own status and any waiting period or exemption.

Family members of EU Blue Card holders may apply for reunification, with work rights checked under their own permits. Eligible ICT family members may also reunite; official ICT guidance states that they may work immediately, but their own residence and employment registration must still be completed. Study, transit, and other statuses must meet their own conditions.

3. Extensions, Changes, Termination, and Status Maintenance

Scenario
Key Requirement
Renewal
Extend visa, work authorization, residence, and family documents separately before expiry.
Change of Employer or Role
Confirm vacancy reporting, notification, amendment, or new-application requirements before starting.
Work Location, Contract, or Assignment Change
Review work authorization and residence status, not only the contract.
EU Blue Card Role or Salary Change
Follow Blue Card notification or approval rules and continue meeting qualification and salary thresholds.
ICT Entity or Role Change
Confirm whether mobility arrangements apply or a new permit is required.
ICT Purpose Ends
Notify within three working days; the stated 60-day protection period is not unconditional work authorization.
Termination or End of Assignment
Reconfirm the basis for work and residence; an unexpired card does not allow work for any new employer.
Transition Period
Assess any job-search or protection period against its conditions, actual approval, and remaining stay.

This cannot be determined from the document name alone. Confirm that the approved category includes the required work rights, whether it is tied to a specific employer or activity, and that applicable post-entry conditions have been met.

No. The actual approval may be limited by the contract, passport, position, quota, and the applicant’s circumstances. The initial period, renewal rules, and cumulative maximum should be assessed separately.
