Senegal’s entry visas, employment-contract authorization, and residence arrangements may be administered separately. Short-term tourism or business visits do not automatically grant local employment rights.

An L33 employment contract that requires an employee to leave their usual place of residence and relocate to work in Senegal must include a pre-employment medical examination, be made in writing, and obtain a DGTSS visa.

The employment contract visa remains valid with the endorsed contract, while a foreign national’s residence period is determined by the corresponding status document. The two cannot replace each other.

Visa Decision Tips

Senegal has different entry, employment-contract visa, and residence arrangements for short-term tourism, business visits, and local employment of foreign nationals. The appropriate route should be selected by considering the person’s nationality, actual activities, employment relationship, contract form, position, work location, existing employment obligations, and family arrangements.

This guide summarizes Senegal’s main requirements for visits, employment-contract visas, foreign-national residence, and status maintenance based on the materials available as of the content review date. Entry authorization, the employment contract visa, and residence documents serve different purposes. A pending application, employment contract, or invitation letter cannot by itself serve as proof that entry, residence, or work has already been approved. Final conditions and decisions are subject to the competent authorities’ requirements at the time of submission.

1. Main Visa and Work Permit Types

Type
Who It Is For
Key Conditions
Short-Term Tourism and Business Visits
Visitors traveling for tourism, family visits, or permitted business activities
Must meet nationality and entry conditions; does not automatically grant local work rights
Employment Contract Visa and Foreign-National Residence
People who leave their usual place of residence under an employment contract to relocate to and work in Senegal
An L33 contract must include a pre-employment medical examination, be made in writing, and obtain a DGTSS visa

1. Short-Term Tourism and Business Visits

Short-term entry requirements for tourism, family visits, business, and similar purposes should be determined according to passport nationality. The permitted stay is subject to the applicable visa-exemption rules, visa, and entry approval. A short-term visit cannot replace the foreign employment contract visa and the residence authorization required for work.

Whether an activity qualifies as a visit should be determined from the actual work involved. Activities such as installation, maintenance, training, and on-site client services require particular confirmation of whether a work permit or specific exemption is required. The assessment cannot be based only on the name of the trip or where salary is paid.

2. Employment Contract Visa and Foreign-National Residence

This route is for people who must leave their usual place of residence under an employment contract to relocate to and work in Senegal. Other forms of local employment for foreign nationals should be assessed under the corresponding labor rules.

An L33 contract must include a pre-employment medical examination, be made in writing, and obtain a visa from the General Directorate of Labor and Social Security (DGTSS). The DGTSS checks the employment conditions, the parties’ identities, free consent, the contract’s compliance, and whether the employee is subject to other employment obligations. The employer submits the visa application; if it is refused, the contract is void by operation of law.

After obtaining the employment contract visa, the employee must still separately complete the applicable entry and medium- or long-term residence procedures. The employment contract visa remains valid with the endorsed contract, while the residence period is determined by the corresponding status document. The two cannot replace each other.

2. Entry, Family Members, and Other Arrangements

Visas, work approvals, and residence documents should match the actual activities and each other’s validity periods. Family members of an employment-contract visa holder must apply separately under the applicable family-relationship and residence rules. Family residence does not automatically grant local work rights.

Family, study, transit, and other personal statuses must independently meet their respective conditions. The principal applicant’s permit cannot be used directly as a family member’s entry or employment document.

3. Extensions, Changes, Termination, and Status Maintenance

Change Scenario
Key Status-Maintenance Point
Contract or Residence Renewal
Review the employment contract visa, entry authorization, residence status, and family documents separately; none of these can replace another.
Change of Employer, Position, or Work Location
Confirm in advance with the DGTSS, the competent local inspection authority, and the immigration authority whether re-endorsement or an update is required.
Change to the Contract or Assignment Arrangement
Confirm notification, amendment, or new-application requirements. Do not amend only the employment contract while overlooking immigration status.
Termination or End of Assignment
Handle termination of the employment contract, tax, social insurance, residence conversion, or departure arrangements.
Working for a New Employer
An unexpired card or document does not mean the person may work directly for a new employer. The applicable authorization should be obtained first.
Transitional Period
If a statutory job-search or transitional arrangement exists, assess it against the person’s actual approval and remaining period of stay.

Frequently Asked Questions

This cannot be determined from the document’s name alone. Confirm whether the employment contract has obtained the required visa, whether the approved status includes the necessary work rights, and whether the applicable entry and residence procedures have been completed.

No. The employment contract visa remains valid with the endorsed contract, while the residence period is determined by the corresponding status document. The two types of documents must be obtained and maintained separately.
