Get a preliminary assessment →Tunisia may administer entry visas, work authorization, and residence arrangements separately. Short-term tourism or business visits do not automatically grant local work rights.
Long-term employment, skilled recruitment, and short-term professional assignments require the appropriate authorization based on the actual activities. The travel description or place of salary payment alone is not decisive.
Different conditions may apply to ordinary, diplomatic, official, and other passport types. The applicant’s nationality and existing immigration status may also affect the requirements.
Visa Decision Tips
Tunisia provides different visa, work, and residence routes for short-term tourism and business visits, local employment, and specific exemption categories. The appropriate arrangement depends on the individual’s nationality, document type, actual activities, employer eligibility, position requirements, employment contract endorsement, exemption category, salary, tax and social security responsibilities, and accompanying-family arrangements.
This guide summarizes Tunisia’s principal visitor, work authorization, residence, and immigration status maintenance requirements based on the information available as of the review date. Entry visas, employment contract endorsements or exemption certificates, work approvals, and residence documents serve different purposes. A pending application, employment contract, or invitation letter does not constitute proof that entry, residence, or work has already been authorized. Final requirements and decisions remain subject to the responsible authorities at the time of application.
1. Main Visa and Work Permit Categories
Category | Who It Is For | Key Requirements |
Short-Term Tourism and Business Visits | Visitors traveling for tourism, family visits, or permitted business activities | Meet the applicable nationality and entry requirements; does not automatically provide local work rights |
Employment Contract Endorsement or Statutory Exemption Certificate | Foreign nationals locally employed by a genuine Tunisian employer | The employer must operate legally and assume responsibility for salary, tax, and social security obligations; standard positions generally also require evidence that no equally qualified Tunisian candidate is available |
The table covers the main categories discussed in this guide and is not an exhaustive list of all Tunisian visa categories.
1. Short-Term Tourism and Business Visits
Short-term entry facilities for holders of ordinary Chinese passports are subject to itinerary, proof of entry, and other applicable conditions. Eligibility should be confirmed according to the genuine tourism or business purpose and cannot automatically be extended to employment.
An employment contract endorsement for a foreign employee, or certification that the employee is not subject to the contract endorsement system, is separate from the visa and residence documents.
Whether an activity qualifies as a visit depends on the actual work performed, rather than only the name of the trip or where the salary is paid. Activities such as installation, repair, training, and customer-site services require particular attention to whether work authorization or a specific exemption is needed.
2. Employment Contract Endorsement or Statutory Exemption Certificate
This route applies to foreign nationals locally employed by a genuine Tunisian employer. Standard cases require an endorsed employment contract.
The employer must operate legally and assume responsibility for salary, tax, and social security obligations. For standard positions, the employer generally must also demonstrate that no equally qualified Tunisian candidate is available.
Exemptions from employment contract endorsement are limited to categories officially specified by the authorities. These may include qualifying managers or representatives, enterprises covered by investment legislation, mining and oil and gas activities, government-cooperation experts, and certain projects or nationalities.
An exemption does not apply automatically based only on the individual’s job title.
The initial validity periods of the work authorization, employment contract, and residence card should be checked separately. All three must be reassessed during renewal.
When the employer, position, or immigration category changes, the requirement for an employment contract endorsement or exemption must be reassessed, together with the corresponding residence arrangements.
2. Entry, Dependants, and Other Arrangements
Entry visas, work approvals, and residence documents should correspond to the actual activities and have compatible validity periods. An employment contract endorsement or statutory exemption certificate is not the same as a visa or residence permit.
Family members must apply based on their relationship to the principal applicant and the principal applicant’s residence status, accommodation, and financial capacity. Any right to work must be confirmed separately for each family member.
Study, transit, and other personal immigration statuses are also subject to their own requirements. The principal applicant’s authorization cannot be used directly as a family member’s entry or employment document.
3. Renewals, Changes, Termination, and Status Maintenance
Change | Status Maintenance Requirement |
Renewal | Before expiry, separately review and extend the visa, work authorization, employment contract endorsement or exemption certificate, residence documents, and dependant documents |
Change of employer or position | Reassess whether an employment contract endorsement or statutory exemption applies and complete any required new residence or work arrangements |
Change of category or project | Do not continue relying on the original exemption based only on the job title; reconfirm the officially listed category and applicable conditions |
Changes to salary, tax, or social security | Continue confirming that the employer meets its salary, tax, and social security responsibilities so that the basis for work and residence is not affected |
Resignation or completion of assignment | Address the employment, social security, tax, residence, departure, or status-conversion requirements together; do not assume that a standard grace period applies |
Transitional period | If a statutory job-search or transitional period applies, assess it according to the actual approval and remaining authorized stay |
