Tanzania’s entry visas, work authorization, and residence arrangements may be handled separately. Short-term tourism or business travel does not automatically grant the right to work locally.

Long-term employment, highly skilled roles, and short-term professional assignments require the appropriate category based on the activities performed. The name of the trip or location of salary payment is not enough to determine the correct route.

Mainland Tanzania and Zanzibar operate under different systems. Work permit and residence permit categories also cannot be matched solely because they use the same letter.

Visa Decision Tips

Tanzania has different visa, work permit, and residence routes for short-term tourism, business assignments, and the employment of non-citizens. The appropriate arrangement depends on the applicant’s nationality, actual activities, assignment duration, employer eligibility, justification for the position, local recruitment efforts, professional qualifications, skills-transfer arrangements, and work location.

This guide explains Tanzania’s main visitor, work permit, and residence arrangements based on the information available as of the review date. Visas, work permits, and residence documents serve different purposes. A pending application, contract, or invitation letter does not prove that entry, residence, or work has already been authorized. Final requirements and decisions remain subject to the relevant authorities at the time of application.

1. Main Visa and Work Permit Categories

Category
Who It Is For
Key Requirements
Short-Term Tourism and Business Visits
Visitors traveling for tourism, family visits, or approved business activities
Meet the applicable nationality and entry requirements; does not automatically provide local work rights
Foreign Employee Work and Residence Permits
Non-citizen employees hired by a genuine employer in Tanzania
The employer must conduct genuine business operations and meet the applicable tax, NSSF/WCF, position justification, local recruitment, and skills-transfer requirements

1. Short-Term Tourism and Business Visits

An Ordinary Visa covers short-term visits such as tourism and family visits and is generally valid for up to 90 days. Applicants should confirm before traveling whether their nationality requires prior approval.

A Business Visa may cover one-off short-term assignments specified by the authorities, such as equipment repairs, short-term training, or audits. It is generally valid for up to 90 days but does not authorize ongoing local employment.

Whether separate employment authorization is required depends on the specific assignment. Installation, repairs, training, and on-site client services cannot be treated as ordinary visitor activities solely because of the trip description or where the salary is paid.

2. Foreign Employee Work and Residence Permits

This route applies to non-citizen employees hired by a genuine employer in Tanzania. Class B applies to professions specified by law, while Class C applies to other occupations.

The employer must conduct genuine business operations and meet the applicable tax, NSSF/WCF, position justification, local recruitment, and skills-transfer requirements.

The employee’s education, skills, professional qualifications, and experience must match the position. There is no single bachelor’s degree or fixed experience requirement that applies to every occupation. Individuals working in regulated professions must first obtain the relevant industry recommendation or registration.

This section applies to Mainland Tanzania. Zanzibar operates under a separate system.

The standard statutory validity of a work permit is 24 months. The combined initial and renewal periods are generally limited to eight years, although the authorities may impose a shorter period based on the assignment or other statutory conditions.

A work permit is not transferable. The category of the residence permit and the category of the employment authorization must be confirmed separately and cannot be assumed to correspond because they use the same letter.

2. Entry, Dependants, and Other Arrangements

Visas, work approvals, and residence documents must correspond to the employee’s actual activities, and their validity periods should remain aligned.

Family members of foreign employees must apply through the applicable dependant or residence route. Dependant status does not automatically provide work authorization.

Study, transit, and other personal immigration categories have separate conditions. The principal applicant’s permit cannot be used directly as a family member’s entry or employment document.

3. Renewals, Changes, Termination, and Status Maintenance

Change
Status Maintenance Requirement
Renewal
Review and extend the work permit, residence permit, and family documents before they expire.
Change of employer
A work permit is not transferable. The employee must obtain new authorization linked to the new employer before beginning work.
Change of position or permit category
Obtain the appropriate new authorization for the new position or category. The existing permit cannot simply be reused.
Change of work location, contract, or assignment
Confirm whether notification, an amendment, or a new application is required. Amending the employment contract alone is not sufficient.
Resignation or end of assignment
Address the work permit, change of residence status, or departure arrangements at the same time.
Transition period
An unexpired permit does not authorize employment with a new employer. Any statutory transition arrangement must be assessed according to the actual approval.

FAQ

Not necessarily. The document’s name alone is not enough to confirm work authorization. The holder must verify whether the approved category includes the required work rights, whether it is restricted to a particular employer or activity, and whether all applicable post-entry conditions have been completed.

No. The period actually granted may depend on the employment contract, passport validity, position, applicable quota, and the applicant’s circumstances. Initial validity, renewal rules, and cumulative maximum periods should be assessed separately.
