Uganda’s entry visas, work authorization, and residence arrangements may be administered separately. Short-term tourism or business visits do not automatically grant local employment rights.

For long-term employment, highly skilled hiring, and short-term professional assignments, the applicable permit should be selected according to the actual activities, not only the trip name or where salary is paid.

Different conditions apply to ordinary passports and diplomatic, service, or other official documents. Nationality and existing status may also affect the rules.

Visa Decision Tips

Uganda has different entry and work routes for short-term tourism, business visits, and local employment. The appropriate arrangement should consider nationality, document type, actual activities, employer eligibility, role needs, professional qualifications, contract term, and family arrangements.

This guide summarizes Uganda’s main visit, work permit, residence, and status-maintenance requirements based on materials available as of the review date. Visas, work approvals, and residence documents serve different purposes. A pending application, contract, or invitation does not prove approval to enter, reside, or work. Final conditions and decisions are subject to the competent authorities’ requirements at submission.

1. Main Visa and Work Permit Types

Type
Who It Is For
Key Conditions
Short-Term Tourism and Business Visits
Visitors traveling for tourism, family visits, or permitted business activities
Must meet nationality and entry conditions; no automatic local work rights
G2 Employment Entry Permit
Foreign employees genuinely hired by a registered Ugandan employer
The employer must be genuinely registered and operating, obtain tax clearance, and explain why a qualified Ugandan employee could not be recruited

1. Short-Term Tourism and Business Visits

Short-term tourism, business, and transit require the corresponding visa or statutory exemption. Regional tourism arrangements such as the East Africa Tourist Visa do not grant work rights. Local employment requires the applicable Entry Permit and lawful residence and cannot be replaced by visitor status.

The actual work determines whether an activity is a visit. Installation, repair, training, and on-site client services require specific confirmation of any work permit or exemption.

2. G2 Employment Entry Permit

The G2 Employment Entry Permit is for foreign employees genuinely hired by a registered Ugandan employer. The employer must be genuinely registered and operating, obtain tax clearance, and explain why a qualified Ugandan employee could not be recruited. The employee must have education, professional qualifications, and experience matching the role and submit yellow-fever, police-clearance, and system-required documents.

The permit may be requested for 6, 12, 24, or 36 months, with the final period determined by the approval. It is tied to the employer and work. A change of employer or position may require a new application or amendment and work cannot begin first.

2. Entry, Family Members, and Other Arrangements

Visas, work approvals, and residence documents should match the actual activities and each other’s validity periods. Family members of a G2 holder must separately obtain dependent or other applicable entry permits; those who plan to work need separate authorization. Study, transit, and other statuses must meet their own conditions.

3. Extensions, Changes, Termination, and Status Maintenance

Scenario
Key Requirement
Renewal
Extend visa, work authorization, residence, and family documents separately before expiry.
Change of Employer or Position
Confirm notification, amendment, or new-application requirements and obtain approval before starting.
Work Location, Contract, or Assignment Change
Review immigration status as well as the employment contract.
Employment Stops
The employer named on the G2 permit must notify immigration within seven days.
Termination or End of Assignment
Reconfirm work authorization and residence; an unexpired card does not authorize work for a new employer.
Transition Period
Assess any job-search or transition period against the actual approval and remaining stay.

This cannot be determined from the document name alone. Confirm that the approved category includes the required work rights, whether it is tied to a specific employer or activity, and that applicable post-entry conditions have been met.

No. The actual period may be limited by the contract, passport, role, quota, and the applicant’s circumstances. The initial period, renewal rules, and cumulative maximum should be assessed separately.
