I. Main Visa and Work Permit Types

The pathways below are the principal options covered by this guide and are not an exhaustive list of all Bahrain visa categories.

1. Tourist and Business Visits

Eligibility for an e-visa, visa on arrival or another visit arrangement depends on nationality and individual circumstances. A business visit should be supported by a genuine invitation or itinerary.

Visits can include permitted meetings and commercial communication. Performing a local role, providing ongoing on-site services or undertaking employment requires the relevant labour authorisation. Extending a visit does not create work rights automatically, and visa validity and authorised stay per entry should be checked separately.

2. New Commercial-Sector Work Permit

The employer must have valid commercial registration and employment authority, meet foreign-worker quota and applicable Bahrainisation requirements, and provide a genuine role and employment contract. Regulated roles such as doctors, teachers, engineers and banking professionals may require additional sector approval.

The applicant’s passport, health condition, professional credentials and application location must meet applicable work and residence rules. A standard commercial work permit for a new hire from abroad is usually issued for one or two years. The six-month commercial permit option introduced in 2025 is limited to foreign employees already resident in Bahrain and does not apply to overseas recruitment; renewals are assessed separately under the applicable conditions.

The work permit must match the actual employer and role. After approval, the employee must still meet the relevant entry and residence conditions.

3. Work Permit for People Already Lawfully Resident

People who already hold eligible family residence or another lawful Bahrain residence may need a specific work permit or work approval based on their status. Not all residence holders automatically qualify for this route, and a residence card alone does not allow a person to start work.

The employer must still have genuine commercial registration and the applicable employment quota, while the role must meet any relevant regulatory-approval requirements. The permit period depends on the labour authority’s decision and the validity of the underlying residence. Work rights must be reassessed if that residence basis ends or changes.

II. Entry, Family and Other Arrangements

1. Entry and Stay

Confirm that the holder, employer and occupation shown on the work permit and residence documents match the actual arrangement. Specific Registered Worker or domestic-worker schemes apply only to their defined groups and are not general alternatives for standard corporate employment.

2. Family and Other Statuses

Accompanying family members must meet the relevant income, relationship and residence conditions. A family member who plans to work in Bahrain must obtain the appropriate work permit or approval; family or long-term residence should not be treated as an open work visa.

III. Renewals, Changes, Departure and Status Maintenance

Change scenario
Key status-maintenance point
Work-permit renewal
Keep the enterprise’s commercial registration, foreign-worker quota and relevant occupation conditions valid, and renew under the applicable process.
Changing employer
The new employer must complete the applicable work-permit transfer process; the person cannot continue working under the original employer’s permit.
Role change
Check whether the new role remains within the approved scope and meets occupation conditions; obtain new approval or amend the permit where required.
Change to underlying residence
People working under a family or other residence basis should reconfirm work rights if that residence ends or changes.
Termination
Cancel or transfer the work permit and simultaneously review the person’s residence, family status, departure or status-change arrangements; stopping salary alone is insufficient.
