1. Main Visa and Work Authorization Routes

Route
Who It Is For
Key Requirement
Short-term tourism and business visits
Visitors entering Cameroon for tourism, family visits, meetings, negotiations, or other permitted short-term activities
The traveler must meet the applicable entry requirements and must not use visitor status as a substitute for local work authorization
Approved employment contract and work authorization
Foreign nationals hired by a genuine Cameroonian employer to perform paid work in Cameroon
The employment contract must follow local requirements and be submitted to the competent labor authority for approval
Long-stay visa and residence arrangements
Foreign employees and other eligible individuals who need to remain in Cameroon beyond a short visit
The applicant must have a valid long-term purpose of stay and complete the applicable visa and residence procedures

These are the principal routes covered in this guide and do not represent every immigration category available in Cameroon.

1. Short-Term Tourism and Business Visits

Cameroon distinguishes between transit, short-stay, and long-stay visas. The appropriate category depends on the traveler’s nationality, purpose of entry, and intended period of stay.

A short-stay visa may be appropriate for tourism, family visits, business meetings, negotiations, and other permitted visitor activities. It does not automatically authorize employment in Cameroon.

The distinction between a business visit and work depends on what the traveler will actually do, not simply on the title of the trip or where salary is paid. Activities such as equipment installation, repairs, operational training, technical support, and repeated client-site services may require work authorization.

Companies should assess the proposed activities before travel rather than assuming that a business invitation or short duration removes the need for employment approval.

2. Employment Contract Approval and Work Authorization

Foreign nationals who will be employed in Cameroon generally need an employment contract approved by the Ministry of Employment and Vocational Training, commonly referred to by its French abbreviation, MINEFOP.

The application is normally supported by a genuine Cameroonian employer and an employment arrangement that complies with local labor and immigration requirements.

Relevant documentation may include:

  1. A valid passport;
  2. A signed employment contract;
  3. Information about the Cameroonian employer;
  4. A detailed job description;
  5. Evidence of the employee’s qualifications and professional experience;
  6. Medical or health documentation where required;
  7. Supporting documents explaining the proposed employment;
  8. Any additional professional or sector-specific authorization applicable to the role.

Approval of the employment contract is a critical part of the work authorization process. A signed contract between the employer and employee does not, by itself, prove that the foreign national has been authorized to work.

The employee should not begin work until the necessary labor and immigration approvals are effective.

The authorization generally remains connected to the approved employer, position, and employment arrangement. A change in employer, role, duties, or work location may require a new approval or formal amendment.

3. Long-Stay Visa and Residence Status

Foreign employees planning to live and work in Cameroon must also establish an appropriate long-term immigration status.

The approved employment contract, long-stay visa, and residence documentation perform different functions. Obtaining one of these documents does not automatically satisfy the requirements for the others.

The applicant may need to complete several stages:

  1. Secure a compliant employment arrangement with a genuine Cameroonian employer;
  2. Obtain the required approval for the foreign employee’s employment contract;
  3. Apply for the appropriate long-stay entry visa;
  4. Complete any required post-arrival registration;
  5. Obtain or maintain the applicable residence documentation.

The validity of a long-stay visa should not be confused with the period for which a person may reside or work in Cameroon. Employers and employees should review the approval dates and conditions shown on each document.

A pending residence application, invitation letter, or signed employment contract should not be treated as confirmation that the individual may already work.

2. Entry, Dependants, and Other Immigration Arrangements

1. Entry and Status Alignment

The employee’s visa, approved employment arrangement, and residence status should reflect the same purpose and remain valid throughout the assignment.

Travelers should check:

  1. Passport validity;
  2. Visa validity and permitted entries;
  3. Authorized length of stay;
  4. Whether post-arrival registration is required;
  5. Whether the individual has permission to perform the proposed work;
  6. Whether the approval is restricted to a particular employer or role.

An application receipt or case under review is not the same as an approved right to enter, reside, or work.

2. Dependants

Eligible family members may be able to apply for an immigration status based on their relationship to the principal applicant. Each dependant must satisfy the applicable documentation and residence requirements.

Dependant status does not automatically provide permission to work. A spouse or other family member intending to take employment in Cameroon should independently assess the applicable employment contract approval and work authorization requirements.

The principal employee’s resignation, immigration expiry, or change of status may also affect the residence position of accompanying family members.

3. Study, Transit, and Other Purposes

Study, transit, and other personal immigration categories are subject to their own requirements. An employment approval issued to a principal applicant cannot be used as an entry or employment document for a family member.

The intended purpose declared in the immigration application should remain consistent with the individual’s actual activities in Cameroon.

3. Renewals, Changes, Termination, and Status Maintenance

Change in Circumstances
Compliance Considerations
Renewal
Review the employment approval, visa, residence document, and dependant status before expiry and allow time for document preparation and filing
Change of employer
Confirm whether a new employment contract approval, visa, or residence procedure is required before starting with the new employer
Change of role or duties
Assess whether the existing approval covers the new position and responsibilities
Change of work location
Determine whether the move requires notification, amendment, or a new application
Contract amendment
Updating the private employment contract alone may not update the employee’s labor or immigration authorization
End of employment
Address the work authorization, residence status, employer obligations, and departure or status-conversion requirements promptly
Unexpired documents
A document that remains within its printed validity period does not necessarily authorize work for a different employer
Dependant status
Reassess family members’ immigration position whenever the principal applicant’s employment or residence basis changes

Employers should keep the employee’s actual job, employer, work location, contract, and immigration approvals aligned throughout the assignment.

Neither an expired work authorization nor a pending renewal should be assumed to provide an automatic right to continue working. If a transition or departure period is available, its conditions and the employee’s remaining lawful stay must be assessed separately.
