1. Main Visa and Work Permit Categories

Category
Who It Is For
Key Requirements
Short-Term Tourist and Business Visit
Visitors traveling for tourism, family visits, or permitted business activities
Must meet applicable nationality and entry requirements; does not automatically grant local work rights
Employment-Based Work and Residence Permit
Foreign employees who have entered Ghana legally and are genuinely employed by a Ghana-registered company to work and reside in Ghana
The employer must be legally registered and meet applicable tax, audit, GIPC registration, and expatriate quota requirements

The table covers the main categories discussed in this guide and is not an exhaustive list of all visa types.

1. Short-Term Tourist and Business Visit

Travelers visiting Ghana for tourism or business will generally need to obtain the appropriate visa in advance. Visa exemptions and emergency entry arrangements depend on the traveler’s nationality and the specific terms of approval. The validity of a multiple-entry visa is not the same as the period permitted for each stay, and a visitor visa cannot replace work and residence permits.

Whether an activity qualifies as a visit depends on what the traveler will actually do, not simply the name given to the trip or where the salary is paid. Activities such as installation, repairs, training, and on-site client services should be reviewed carefully to determine whether a work permit or a specific exemption is required.

2. Employment-Based Work and Residence Permit

This arrangement applies to foreign nationals who have entered Ghana legally and are genuinely employed by a Ghana-registered company to work and reside in Ghana.

The employer must be legally registered and meet applicable tax, audit, GIPC registration, and expatriate quota requirements. An expatriate quota granted to an investment enterprise is a company-level eligibility condition; it does not mean that an individual employee has already received a work permit. The applicant must have a genuine employment contract, qualifications suited to the position, and meet applicable health, background, lawful entry, and residence requirements.

An initial permit is commonly issued for approximately one year, although some applications may be approved for two years. The final validity period is determined by the Ghana Immigration Service (GIS). Tax, audit, employment contract, and personal documents must be updated for renewal.

When changing employer or position, the employee must confirm whether a new application or replacement of an expatriate quota position is required. When employment ends, the employer and employee are generally required to notify the immigration authorities within seven days.

2. Entry, Dependants, and Other Arrangements

Entry visas, work authorization, and residence documents must reflect the individual’s actual activities and remain valid for the relevant period. Dependants of employment-based work and residence permit holders must obtain separate dependant residence status. A dependant who intends to work must also obtain separate work authorization.

Study, transit, and other personal immigration categories have their own requirements. The principal applicant’s permit cannot be used as a dependant’s entry or employment document.

3. Renewals, Changes, Termination, and Status Maintenance

Change
Status Maintenance Requirement
Work and residence permit renewal
Apply before expiry and update the required tax, audit, employment contract, and personal documents.
Change of employer or position
Confirm whether a new application or replacement of an expatriate quota position is required, and obtain approval before starting the new role.
Change in work location, contract, or assignment
Confirm whether notification, amendment, or a new application is required. Updating the employment contract alone may not be sufficient.
End of employment
The employer and employee are generally required to notify the immigration authorities within seven days.
Resignation or completion of assignment
Reassess the employee’s work authorization and residence basis, then complete the required status change or departure arrangements.
Dependant status
Review dependant residence and work authorization separately. The principal applicant’s permit does not automatically grant dependants the right to work.
Transition period
An unexpired permit does not authorize work for a new employer. Any statutory transition period must be assessed against the approval conditions and remaining period of stay.
