I. Main Visa and Work Permit Types

1. Tourist Visa (Type T)

Tourist visas and e-visas are for permitted tourism activities. Visa-free entry, visa on arrival and electronic application availability depend on nationality, entry port and current policy. Tourist status cannot replace authorisation for local employment or project services.

2. Ordinary Visa (Type E) and EB Extension of Stay

Type E is an ordinary visa category that may support eligible business or employment arrangements. The Type E e-visa is generally single entry, usable within three months from issue, with an initial one-month stay. Eligible applicants may apply for an EB or other relevant extension, but Type E and EB are not labour work permits. Long-term stay does not by itself permit employment with a Cambodian enterprise.

3. Foreign Work Permit and Employment Card

Employers must operate genuinely, maintain tax and labour registration, and obtain the applicable annual foreign-worker quota. Employees need lawful entry, stay status matching actual activity, and relevant health, role qualification and professional-licence conditions. Cambodia does not impose a single bachelor’s-degree threshold for every role.

Foreign work permits and employment cards must match the real employer and employment contract and be maintained under the approved period and annual renewal requirements. A work permit cannot exist apart from a valid residence basis. Type E, EB and work-permit expiry dates must each be tracked separately.

II. Entry, Family and Other Arrangements

Check the entry port, travel-document requirements and stay conditions applicable to the visa. Time-limited visitor conveniences for Chinese or other nationals are not employment conveniences. Family, study, retirement and investment statuses have different stay conditions and do not automatically create work rights. Foreign shareholders or directors who actually manage the business or carry out role duties may also require work authorisation.

III. Renewals, Changes, Departure and Status Maintenance

Scenario
Key action
Continuing work
Maintain the EB extension, employer annual foreign-worker quota and individual work permit separately.
Renewal
Check Type E, EB and work-permit expiry dates separately and renew each under its own requirements.
Changing employer
A permit for the original employer cannot simply be used for a new employer; reconfirm the relevant approval and application requirements.
Role or employment relationship change
Update relevant approvals promptly when the role, contract or actual employment relationship changes.
Unemployment or new employer
Unemployment beyond the applicable period or engagement by another employer may lead to cancellation of the original permit.
Termination
Confirm stay status, work-permit cancellation, departure or status-change arrangements together.
