1. Main Visa and Work Permit Types

Type
Who It Applies To
Key Conditions

The employer must hold a valid Expatriate Quota with an available position and assume immigration sponsorship responsibility
R10/R11 Temporary Work Permit (TWP)
Foreign specialists invited by a company to perform installation, maintenance, repairs, training, or another defined specialist assignment
The Nigerian inviting party must provide a specific assignment and assume immigration sponsorship responsibility

These are the principal types covered by this guide and are not an exhaustive list of all Nigerian visa categories.

1. Short-Term Tourism and Business Visits

Short-term visitors should select the appropriate visa according to the genuine purpose, such as tourism, business, or another activity. The period during which the visa may be used for entry is different from the period of stay authorized on each entry, and the visa document and entry approval should be checked separately.

A business visit cannot replace long-term employment authorization. People planning to perform a temporary technical assignment in Nigeria should assess the applicable Temporary Work Permit.

Whether an activity qualifies as a business visit depends on the actual activities, not merely the itinerary name or where salary is paid. Equipment installation, repairs, training, and on-site client services require particular confirmation as to whether work authorization or a specific exemption is needed.

2. R2A Employment Visa and e-CERPAC Residence

This pathway applies to foreign nationals employed long term by a Nigerian registered company under a valid Expatriate Quota.

The employer must hold a valid Expatriate Quota with an available position and assume the corresponding immigration sponsorship responsibility. The employee’s employment contract, professional qualifications, and actual duties should remain consistent with the quota position.

People in regulated professions must also obtain the applicable professional authorization. A company cannot use another company’s Expatriate Quota to process an employee’s status.

The official page for the R2A entry document states that it is valid for 90 days after issuance and cannot be extended. e-CERPAC residence and work status may generally be approved for two years, but the actual period is governed by the Expatriate Quota, employment contract, and card decision.

At renewal of e-CERPAC and the related work status, the Expatriate Quota, employment contract, and sponsorship relationship must remain valid.

After a change of employer or position, the employee cannot continue using the original Expatriate Quota or the status tied to the original sponsoring employer. The new employer must confirm that it has an applicable quota position and complete a new application or transfer procedure.

After employment ends, the former employer should cancel the status, release or update the Expatriate Quota position, and coordinate the employee’s departure or transition to a new lawful status.

3. R10/R11 Temporary Work Permit (TWP)

The R10/R11 Temporary Work Permit applies to foreign specialists invited by a company to Nigeria for installation, maintenance, repairs, training, or another defined professional or project assignment.

The Nigerian inviting party must provide a specific assignment and assume immigration sponsorship responsibility. Under the current categories of the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS), the inviting party must also obtain prior approval from the Comptroller-General of Immigration (CGI) or a Visa Approval Letter (VAL).

The applicant must have professional skills matching the assignment and provide return-travel and project evidence. The assignment period, work location, sponsoring employer, and relevant equipment or contract should match the declared information.

TWP Category
Maximum Period and Entry Arrangement
R10
Up to 90 days
R11
Up to six months, multiple entry, officially stated as non-renewable

R10 and R11 cover only the specific approved assignment and do not automatically create e-CERPAC status or long-term work rights. A change of sponsoring employer, project, work location, or period requires new approval.

When the assignment ends or employment terminates, the holder should depart as required by the permit. The applicant cannot first become an ordinary long-term employee under the original TWP and complete the relevant procedures afterward.

2. Entry, Dependants, and Other Arrangements

1. Entry and Status Coordination

Visas, work approvals, and residence documents should match the actual activities, and their validity periods should be coordinated.

A pending application, employment contract, or invitation letter does not by itself prove that entry, residence, or work has already been authorized.

2. Accompanying Family Members

Spouses and other eligible family members of R2A and e-CERPAC holders must apply separately under the applicable R2B–R2E or other corresponding categories. The validity of dependant status depends on the principal applicant’s status and does not automatically confer the right to work.

A TWP is not a stable pathway for family residence. Family visits and work rights require separate applications.

Family, study, transit, and other personal statuses must each meet their own conditions. The principal applicant’s permit cannot be used directly as a family member’s entry or employment document.

3. Renewals, Changes, Termination, and Status Maintenance

Change Scenario
Key Status-Maintenance Point
e-CERPAC renewal
The Expatriate Quota, employment contract, sponsorship relationship, and other approval conditions must remain valid.
Change of employer
The previous employer’s quota position and sponsored status cannot continue to be used. The new employer must confirm an available position and complete a new application or transfer.
Change of position
The new position must have an applicable Expatriate Quota, and the employee’s contract, qualifications, and duties must match it.
Change to a TWP project
A change of project, sponsoring employer, location, or period requires a new application or confirmation of approval.
End of a TWP assignment
The employee must stop the approved activities and depart as required; the old TWP cannot be used to become an ordinary employee directly.
Termination of a long-term employee
The former employer must cancel the status and release or update the relevant Expatriate Quota position.
Cards or permits have not yet expired
An unexpired document does not mean that work rights remain valid after the original employment relationship or assignment ends.
Maintenance of dependant status
If the principal applicant’s employment or residence basis changes, the family members’ documents should also be reviewed.
New status or departure
After employment or the assignment ends, arrange a new lawful status or departure promptly.

Nigeria’s entry visa, Expatriate Quota, work authorization, and residence status must be maintained separately. If the employer, position, work location, contract, or project changes, the immigration and employment procedures should be checked together.
