1. Main Visa and Work Permit Types

Type
Who It Applies To
Key Conditions
Tourism and Business Visits
People visiting for tourism, meetings, negotiations, and non-work activities
Must meet the nationality and visit-category conditions and must not perform local work
Work Visa
Foreign nationals employed long term by a local Omani employer
Generally requires the applicant to be at least 21, with a valid employer and labor permit and qualifications matching the occupation
Temporary Work Visa
Foreign nationals performing a clearly time-limited project
The project, employer, and occupation must match, with the corresponding temporary labor permit

1. Tourism and Business Visits

Short-term entry may use the applicable visa-free arrangement, eVisa, or visit arrangement according to nationality, travel document, and purpose of visit. Permitted stay periods, entry numbers, and extension conditions differ among categories.

Meetings and commercial contacts are different from taking up a local position or delivering services on site. Even if salary is paid from overseas, actual work in Oman requires the applicable authorization. A visit visa cannot replace labor approval or a dedicated Temporary Work Visa.

2. Work Visa

The employer must have local sponsorship eligibility, an available occupation and employment approval, and comply with applicable Omanisation and industry requirements. The applicant generally must be at least 21, and the occupation and supporting documents must match the labor permit. Medical and professional-qualification conditions must also be met, and regulated roles may require separate approval.

A Work Visa generally allows a stay of two years with multiple entries, but the actual period depends on the visa and permit issued. The labor permit, visa, and residence status should be coordinated, and the holder cannot work independently of the approved employer or occupation.

3. Temporary Work Visa

This pathway is based on a temporary labor approval for a defined period. The applicant generally must be at least 21 and satisfy the medical and occupational requirements.

A Temporary Work Visa may be issued for four, six, or nine months according to the approved labor period and generally allows multiple entries. The nine-month maximum does not mean that every short-term project qualifies, and repeated temporary applications cannot be used to avoid the conditions for long-term work. If the project or employer changes, the new permit requirements must first be confirmed.

2. Entry, Dependants, and Other Arrangements

1. Entry and Stay

The applicant’s information must remain consistent with the employer’s information, and regulated occupations require the corresponding authorization. The Employment Contracting Visa is intended mainly for specific employment situations in which a government authority must conduct an assessment in advance; it is not an ordinary Work Visa, and its short assessment stay cannot replace authorization for formal employment.

2. Family Members and Other Statuses

Accompanying-family arrangements depend on the principal applicant’s residence status, family relationship, and other applicable conditions. Dependant status does not automatically grant the right to work. A family member who plans to work in Oman must still obtain the applicable labor and immigration authorization.

3. Renewals, Changes, Termination, and Status Maintenance

Change Scenario
Key Status-Maintenance Point
Renewal
First ensure that the labor permit remains valid, and then maintain the Work Visa and residence status.
Change of employer
Complete the labor-authority transfer process and the corresponding immigration procedures; the original Work Visa cannot simply continue to be used.
Change of occupation
First confirm that the new occupation is open, that the job-qualification requirements are met, and that the necessary approvals are available, and then complete the corresponding permit change.
Change of project
A Temporary Work Visa depends on the approved project, employer, and duration. If the project changes, first confirm whether a new permit is required.
Termination of employment
Address cancellation of the labor permit, residence status, and transfer or departure arrangements.
Repatriation and stay
The period allowed for employer-funded repatriation arrangements cannot be treated as a grace period during which the employee may continue working.
