1. Main Visa and Work Permit Types

Type
Who It Is For
Key Conditions
Tourism and Business Visits
People traveling for tourism, meetings, negotiations, and permitted business activities
Must meet visa-category and nationality conditions and must not undertake local work in Saudi Arabia
Long-Term Work Entry, Work Permit, and Iqama
Non-Saudi employees hired by a Saudi company for long-term employment
Requires a genuine employer, available recruitment approval, matching professional qualifications, and localization compliance
Temporary Work Visa
Foreign nationals carrying out a defined short-term work contract or project
Must be sponsored by an eligible Saudi company, with the assignment, occupation, and performance period genuinely matching the approval

1. Tourism and Business Visits

The tourist eVisa and business visit visa have their own eligible applicants and activity restrictions. Attendance at meetings, business negotiations, and non-work commercial interactions may be assessed under the business-visit route based on the actual arrangements.

On-site implementation, continuing technical services, or employment with a local company generally requires the corresponding work authorization. An applicant cannot perform actual work under visitor status merely because a client issued an invitation, the stay is short, or salary is paid overseas.

Tourism, business, Hajj, and other religious-visit statuses are not interchangeable. The applicant’s actual activities, length of stay, and area of activity should remain consistent with the conditions of the visa held.

2. Long-Term Work Entry, Work Permit, and Iqama

A Saudi employer must hold a valid commercial registration and authorization to employ foreign workers, and must continuously comply with Nitaqat/Saudization localization, wage-protection, and applicable industry conditions.

The foreign employee must have a genuine employment contract and an approved occupation. Academic or professional certification must match the actual position.

Long-term employment generally involves the following stages:

Document or Approval
Main Purpose
Recruitment approval or available quota
Supports the employer’s arrangement for eligible foreign personnel to enter for employment
Permanent work visa
An entry arrangement for long-term employment purposes; it is not permanent residence
Work permit
Grants the right to work within the approved scope
Iqama
Enables lawful residence in Saudi Arabia and must remain aligned with work status

The word “Permanent” in Permanent work visa does not mean that the applicant obtains permanent resident status or has unlimited work rights.

The period during which recruitment approval may be used and the entry period shown on the employee’s visa should be checked separately. The employee must enter within the period permitted by the individual visa. The validity of recruitment approval should not be treated as the period during which the person may work in Saudi Arabia.

The work permit and Iqama must be obtained and kept valid as required. Their specific validity periods are determined by the approval result and the actual documents. A work-entry visa, recruitment quota, or application receipt cannot replace effective work and residence authorization.

3. Temporary Work Visa

The Temporary Work Visa is for eligible short-term assignments. The sponsoring company must meet requirements concerning valid registration, platform eligibility, localization, and available temporary visas.

The visa is not intended for long-term or continuous on-site arrangements. The applicant’s actual assignment, occupation, project, and work period must match the approved details.

Period Item
Typical Arrangement
Visa usage period
Normally usable within one year from the date of issuance
Permitted stay after entry
90 days
Extension
One further extension of 90 days may be requested under the rules, but approval is not automatic

The one-year period is the period during which the visa may be used; it does not mean that the applicant may work continuously for one year after entry. The actual stay and work must comply with the 90-day period and applicable extension rules.

Temporary work status does not automatically convert into a long-term work permit or Iqama. If the project, employer, or work period changes, the corresponding new approval should be confirmed and obtained first.

2. Entry, Family Members, and Other Arrangements

1. Entry and Stay

The applicant should check the approved occupation, academic or professional certification, health requirements, and the entry document actually used.

After entry for work purposes, statutory time limits may apply to employment and residence procedures, but these time limits must not be interpreted as a grace period allowing the applicant to bypass work authorization and start work early.

People who need to enter and leave Saudi Arabia repeatedly must also meet the applicable exit and re-entry conditions.

2. Family Members and Other Statuses

Eligible work-residence holders may arrange family residence or family-visit visas depending on their circumstances. Family residence and family-visit visas serve different purposes and should be selected according to the actual accompanying and stay plans.

Family status does not automatically grant work rights. Family members who plan to work in Saudi Arabia should separately confirm the applicable work and residence route.

Premium Residency and investment-related statuses have independent eligibility conditions and are not equivalent to an ordinary long-term work visa.

3. Extensions, Changes, Termination, and Status Maintenance

Change Scenario
Key Status-Maintenance Point
Work Permit and Iqama Renewal
The work permit and Iqama should be maintained separately, while the employer continues to meet localization, approved-occupation, and other foreign-worker conditions.
Change of Employer
Complete the applicable employer-transfer and related work and residence procedures; the change cannot be completed only by signing a new contract.
Change of Occupation
Obtain the corresponding occupation-change approval. The actual position should remain consistent with the work permit and residence records.
Termination of Employment
Handle the employment relationship, work permit, and residence status promptly, and confirm either transfer to a new employer or final-departure arrangements.
Linked Family Status
If the principal applicant’s employment or residence basis changes, confirm the family members’ residence or visit arrangements at the same time.

Foreign employees may work only for the approved employer, in the approved occupation, and within the approved scope of work. Until the applicable transfer, amendment, or renewal procedures are confirmed, the original permit should not be assumed to apply automatically to a new employer or position.
