These are the main categories covered here, not an exhaustive list of South African visas.

1. Short-Term Tourism and Business Visits

Visitor visas are generally used for tourism, family visits, or business visits of up to 90 days, subject to the approval. Meetings or negotiations are not the same as local employment. Short-term actual work requires specific work authorization and cannot begin under an ordinary visitor visa.

The actual activities determine whether travel is a business visit. Installation, repair, training, and on-site client services require confirmation of any permit or specific exemption.

2. General Work Visa

This visa is for foreign nationals genuinely hired by a South African employer who meet the points requirements. Applicants need a genuine contract and 100 points. NQF level 9–10 qualifications receive 50 points; NQF 7–8 receive 30. Annual salary above ZAR 976,194 receives 50 points; ZAR 650,976–976,194 receives 20. Five to ten years of experience receives 20 points; more than ten years receives 30. Employment by a credible employer receives 30, and proficiency in a South African official language receives 10.

Applicants who reach 100 points must still pass background and applicable qualification checks. The routine medical-report submission requirement was waived from July 8, 2026, but other entry and work conditions remain. The visa is generally issued for the contract term, up to five years. Certain applicants with proof of a pending SAQA evaluation may initially receive 12 months. Renewal and employer, role, or condition changes require continued compliance and applicable new authorization.

3. Critical Skills Work Visa

This visa is for employees whose occupation appears on the current Critical Skills List and who have relevant qualifications, experience, and genuine South African employment. A listed occupation may receive 100 points, but background, qualification, and professional-body requirements still apply.

The initial visa is generally valid for up to five years, subject to passport, job offer, and approval conditions. Renewal requires continued compliance with the current list, qualifications, employer, and other conditions. Employer, occupation, or role changes may require a new application or amendment. After termination, a new sponsor, other status, or departure should be assessed immediately; no uniform grace period should be assumed.

4. Intracompany Transfer Work Visa (ICT)

The ICT visa is for an existing overseas employee transferred to a South African branch, subsidiary, or affiliate to perform a group role and transfer skills. The group relationship, existing overseas employment, genuine transfer, South African role, and skills-transfer plan must be documented, and the host entity assumes applicable employer and immigration responsibilities.

The ICT visa is valid for up to four years and cannot be renewed. It is not a rolling local-employment route. Changes to the host entity, role, group relationship, or project require prior approval. Before expiry or the assignment ends, the applicant must qualify for another work route or depart.

2. Entry, Family Members, and Other Arrangements

1. Entry and Status Alignment

Visas, work approvals, and residence documents should match the actual activities and each other’s validity periods. Pending applications, contracts, or invitations do not prove approval to enter, reside, or work.

2. Accompanying Family Members

Spouses and children of General Work Visa, Critical Skills, or ICT holders must apply separately under the appropriate accompanying or dependent route. Family status does not automatically grant work rights and is affected by the principal applicant’s visa period. Study, transit, and other statuses must meet their own conditions.

3. Extensions, Changes, Termination, and Status Maintenance

Scenario
Key Requirement
General Work Visa Renewal
Continue meeting points, genuine-work, and compliance conditions before expiry.
Critical Skills Renewal
Continue meeting the current list, professional qualification, employer, and approval conditions.
ICT Expiry
ICT is capped at four years and cannot be renewed; change route or depart before expiry.
Employer or Role Change
Confirm and obtain the applicable new authorization.
ICT Arrangement Change
Obtain new approval before changing the host, role, group relationship, or project.
Termination
Immediately assess a new status or departure; an unexpired card does not authorize work for a new employer.
Grace Period
Do not assume a fixed uniform grace period after termination.
Family Status
Recheck family status when the principal applicant’s work visa or assignment changes.

Changes to employer, role, occupation, work location, contract, or group transfer require review of both work-visa and immigration requirements, not only the contract or assignment document.
